Hematite is a common mineral form of iron. Normally found in places where there has been standing water or hot springs, where it collects in the bottom in layers. It is normally this colour silvery grey, but the name "hematite" is derived from the Greek word for "blood" as it is often found to be red.
It is popular as jewellery in Europe and north and western America since the Victorian era.
Not to be confused with "Hematine", which is a synthetic material sold as magnetic hematite.
